13 Halloween Books for Toddlers, Preschoolers, & Young Kids
One of my favorite parts of teaching was enjoying the holidays with my students. Children love listening to stories read by a teacher or adult, and it is even more delightful if the book has colorful & entertaining pictures.
I also found that for the most part, books I would read to my 4 year old would often be just as enjoyable to 7-8 year old students (as much as they may not admit:).
Below are 13 books that I have found to be adored by kids 3-8 years!

These 5 books are great for younger children especially toddlers & preschoolers.
Each book is short enough to hold your little one’s attention span, all the while displaying detailed pictures of characters wearing Halloween costumes.
Even better is the fact that they are pop up or lift-the- flap books.
What child doesn’t enjoy a great popup book?
Pop Peekaboo! Pumpkin written by DK
Boo! Guess Who Elmo! written by Ernie Kwiat
Happy Halloween Daniel Tiger! written by Angela Santomero
Mickey’s Halloween Treat written by Thea Feldman
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween written Alice Schertle

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever written by Steven Kroll
The Biggest _____Ever books are always enjoyable for children.
This particular book is a story about friendship and the realization that it is better to share and work together.

Berenstain Bear Trick or Treat
Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin
written by Stan & Jan Berenstain
Both of these books have good underlying messages about the ways we respond and communicate with others in real life situations (i.e appearances may be deceiving or appreciating what is really important in life).

The third book –
The Berenstain Bears Go on a Ghost Walk
I suggest for children closer to 6-8 years old.
This book is all-in good Halloween fun. However, in my opinion, some of the pictures tend to be a little spookier for younger ones.

Too Many Pumpkins written by Linda White
This book was always a favorite when I read to my class of
7-8 years and when I read it to my 4 year old.
The story tells a tale of a woman who has a great dislike of pumpkins. In the end, she realizes what a gift pumpkins are to her and others around her.
This is a heartwarming story where it would be fun to incorporate a pumpkin treat such as bread or muffins.

Looking for a book where kids can respond through song, chant, or movements? Here are the books for you!
Shake Dem Halloween Bones written by W. Nikola- Lisa
We’re Going on a Pumpkin Hunt written by Steve Metzger or a 2nd version written by Mary Wilcox
Depending the age of the child, you can provide the response movements(or not).
Or, if the child is a bit older, they can help create the moves used – especially with the story We’re Going on a Pumpkin Hunt.
Children really enjoy how interactive these books are when read out loud.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin written by Joe Troiano
This is one book that always seems to be a Halloween favorite enjoyed by ALL ages.
The moral of this story serves as a great reminder not to judge others based on appearances or differences.
Not only can you order the book and your very own Spookley plush, it’s a movie too!
